Review of Fire and Police Communications and Dispatch in Waterloo Region

This joint project involves the Region of Waterloo, the Waterloo Regional Police Service, City of Kitchener, City of Waterloo, and the City of Cambridge. The review findings will also benefit the 4 rural municipalities in the Region – the Townships of North Dumfries, Wellesley, Wilmot, and Woolwich as they are dispatched by, and fund, the existing shared fire dispatch centre. Fire departments in the seven municipalities in Waterloo Region are served by a central fire communications centre operated by the City of Kitchener. Police communications and dispatch, and 911, are provided by the Waterloo Regional Police. This review will examine all options and make recommendations as to the most effective, efficient, and appropriate dispatch model for fire and police within a broader public safety access point model to serve the population base of 624,000. The project will also consider and identify workplan enhancements and budget requirements to support future technology upgrades and Next Generation 911 requirements
