Dr. Karen Wanger, MDCM, FRCPC, is a Royal College Board certified Emergency Physician with subspecialty expertise in EMS Medical Direction and 13 years’ experience providing medical oversight and direction for the BC Ambulance Service, the largest single provider service in Canada. Karen is serving her second term as Physician Member-at-Large on the Board of Directors of the National Association of EMS Physicians. Karen’s training in both Canada and the US gives her a solid knowledge of EMS across North America, and her in-depth understanding of EMS operations in addition to medical oversight makes her unique in the industry.
Prior to serving as VP Medical Programs for the Emergency and Health Services Commission in BC, Karen was the Regional Medical Director for BC Ambulance Service Lower Mainland Region, the largest region in the Service. BCAS LM includes 1100 paramedics and dispatchers providing tiered response to over 400,000 responses/year. As the Regional Medical Director led many projects aimed at paramedic safety and education, patient safety, and cooperative effort between the BC Ambulance Service and the hospitals across the Region. Examples include: working with specialized hospital teams to create new field guidelines for the treatment of children with life limiting conditions, specialized orders for treatment of patients with Ventricular Assist devices, patients on Flolan, and patients with “do not do CPR” orders, complete restructuring and reorganization of the Regional narcotic control plan to insure paramedic safety and compliance with Federal regulation, and provided medical oversight to the BCAS 2010 Olympic Planning Team.
Karen brings her specialized expertise to Pomax projects involving all aspects of EMS. She has a distinguished record of successful completion of multiple complex, multi-stakeholder projects throughout her career.
